Hot sauce with no sugar, no seed oils and zero calories

Most hot sauces have more in them than you'd guess. Not always anything sinister — but sugar, thickeners, stabilisers and industrial oils turn up routinely in bottles that look artisanal on the shelf.

Here is what's in ours, in full:

The complete ingredient list

  • Pomegranate vinegar
  • Red jalapeño peppers
  • Red Thai bird chilies
  • Fresh garlic
  • Sea salt
  • Cumin
  • Smoked paprika

Seven ingredients. That's the entire list — not the highlights.

What isn't in it

No added sugar. Plenty of premium sauces lean on sugar, honey or agave to balance heat. Ours gets its sweetness from the pomegranate vinegar itself, which brings a fruity tang rather than flat sweetness.

No seed oils. No canola, soybean, sunflower or vegetable oil. There's no oil in the recipe at all.

No preservatives. No sodium benzoate, no potassium sorbate. The vinegar and salt do the preserving, the way they have for a very long time.

No thickeners, gums or starches. No xanthan gum, no modified corn starch. The texture comes from the peppers.

No artificial colours or flavours. The colour is what happens when you blend red chilies with pomegranate vinegar.

Zero calories per serving

Our nutrition panel reads 0 calories per serving. That follows directly from the ingredient list — there's no oil, no sugar and no starch in the bottle, which is where calories in a condiment normally come from.

It's worth saying plainly what that does and doesn't mean. It means you can be generous with it without thinking about it. It doesn't mean the sauce is doing anything for you beyond tasting good, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Dietary notes

Mr. Moustache Signature Pomegranate Hot Sauce is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free and shelf-stable. It contains no common allergens. It's made in a facility with FDA and SQF certification.

Why the label is short on purpose

A short ingredient list isn't a marketing decision, it's a cooking decision. Every ingredient in this bottle is there because it's doing something you can taste.

The pomegranate vinegar carries brightness and acid. The two chilies do different jobs — jalapeño for body and a rounder heat, Thai bird for the sharper edge behind it. Garlic and cumin give it depth. Smoked paprika sits underneath and holds the whole thing together. Salt makes all of it legible.

Add a thickener and you've muted the texture. Add sugar and you've flattened the tang you were paying for. Every extra ingredient in a sauce like this is usually there to compensate for a shortcut taken somewhere else.

How to store it

Keep it out of direct sunlight in a cool, dark place. Once opened, refrigerate for best freshness. Give it a shake before each use — with no stabilisers in the bottle, it separates a little, which is exactly what it should do.

Two Brothers, One Great Hot Sauce

When brothers Ghazi and Hamza visited their homeland of Jordan and came upon stories and pictures of their father, uncles and grandfather (who all had majestic moustaches) they realized many Arabs in the US were missing out on hearing about and learning from their own ancestors. They decided to build a brand representing these values of traditional Arab hospitality and community. Thus, the birth of Mr. Moustache: a brand that will not only bring iconic Arab flavors to the US, but also a piece of home
